The Hitting Zone

The NHL just makes it up as they go along, why can't we?

Text From Pens Only Dumps Fuel on the Fire

The Penguins have a magnificent text message notification system for their fans, truly.  If you haven’t signed up for it you should.  Apart from being texted every final score you also get trade and signing notifications as well as other pertinent updates.  However receiving a update today meant one of a very few things was going on.  Either there was a signing or something was up within the organization.  There was no draft to update and free agency doesn’t begin for another 28 days.    This is what bliped up on my phone a short time ago:

PENS ALERT: Sidney Crosby met with Dr. Collins and is set to start his summer off-ice workout program. Read more:http://bit.ly/mdQMV6  Stop 2end

So yeah, I clicked the link.  Lets just say the statement in the short text message doesn’t convey what is said in the short post quite clearly enough.   Sidney Crosby is starting his off-ice workouts.  The part of the snippet that gives me pause is that he will not start on-ice workouts until late July or early August.  That gives Sid in essence two months to get back up to speed with his on ice stuff following pretty much a 6 month layoff.

Does it put his chances at playing in the season opener at risk?  Nobody Knows.  That honestly is what is very troubling about this entire message.  Nothing new was really revealed.  In my opinion it would have been better to simply continue to say nothing.  Some fans will get their hopes too high on this note only to jeopardize them.  Some fans will get their panties in a wad and begin anew the crazy talk of what the Pens should do on July 1st when free agency opens to plan for a Crosby absence this fall.  All of it is conjecture.

We learned two small things today.  Sid is going to start his off-ice workouts in Cole Harbor with his personal trainer.  He won’t do on-ice work until pretty much August.  Anyone who wants to say they know something more is blowing sunshine up your butt for ad impressions on their website.  The concept of an off-ice workout is a very broad thing.  It could mean that he is going to start conditioning full bore and be getting back to true shape.  It could mean a bike 30 minutes a day.  No one knows.

That is more my point.  Why even do this today?  We already knew Sid was consulting with Dr. Michael Collins at UPMC for the post-concussion consultations.  We’ve learned that Dr. Collins will remain as a manager of Sid’s activity and progression.  Beyond that we simply saw the Penguins toss a 5 gallon jerry can of gasoline on a low flame burner.

I would caution anyone who derives anything new from this.  It might feel like this is good news but the Penguins offered very little in terms of new information.  The only world of positivity they chose was “hope“.

Also, one small thing I picked up on after the initial post was that according to Faceoff Factor’s Jesse Marshall the “relapse” of symptoms the Sid experienced during the first round of the playoffs were due to a sinus infection and not a return of post-concussion symptoms.  Rob Rossi’s article in the Trib seems to be the source.  Take it for what it’s worth.  Rossi has spun bigger tales before but I hope this one is truthfact.

  1. To clarify, I did take that tidbit I put on Twitter courtesy of Rob Rossi’s article on the Trib this afternoon. Like you, I hope that this is truthful.
