Mixed Emotions on Boogaard

Late last Saturday I was shaken, like most hockey fans, by the announcement that Derek Boogaard of the Rangers had been found dead in his Minneapolis apartment at the young age of 28.  Having played a little and been involved in quite a few head injuries I stopped and thought for a minute.  Man 28 is young.  I’m about to be 34.  Is there some dark monster in my head looking to snatch me too?  Boogaard’s season had been cut short by concussion.

Today the Hennepin County Medical Examiner ruled the cause of Boogaard’s death to be an accidental lethal mix of alcohol and the prescription pain killer oxycodone.  This announcement while somewhat expected after some of the rumor dropping of the previous week still has torn me in several directions. Boobs on the Glass Isn’t All That Funny

Imagine you are a dad five rows back and you see this with your young children. How would you feel?

I’ve given this a lot of thought.  Ever since hearing about a female fan pressing her bare breasts against the penalty box glass late in Game 2 of the West Finals, to the delight of Ben Eager, I’ve been torn on as to if I should joke or chastise.  I’ve come down in favor of the latter and for one simple reason:  I’m a father of two young boys.  I had to sit and think what if I were there.  Well If it were me and just me in the stands I probably would have had a laugh.  However I really don’t think that way anymore.  I think about what if we were there.  We meaning my family.

Look I got bent last summer when Lady Gaga decided to parade herself around the stands of a Mets game in just her bra and panties.  I was the leader of the lynch mob in my circle of friends.  Sure I am all about free speech as a strict defender of the Constitution, but look at the back of your tickets please.  By entering the venue of your chosen sporting team as a ticket holder you are consenting to adhere to certain guidelines.  I am sure that Lady Gaga as well as this flashing Canucks fan were both under the umbrella of such agreements that include consideration for other fans, words about a family environment and decency. My Official Stance on Jagr

Ever since Jaromir Jagr showed a return to form at this spring’s IIHF World Championship the rumor mill has been buzzing with the will Jagr make an NHL comeback vibe.  Jagr himself has stated that the Penguins along with the Rangers and Habs would comprise some kind of short list of teams.   The fire was stoked further when Penguins Gm Ray Shero travelled to the WC tho it was never confirmed he spoke with Jagr.  Shero even said afterwards that he didn’t.

Let me say right now, unequivocally, that I am dead set against a return in any form by Jaromir Jagr to the Pittsburgh Penguins.   Read the rest of this entry »

See Pens Prospect Despres on NHL Network

The Saint John Sea Dogs of the QMJHL qualified for the Master Card Memorial Cup tournament to crown the champion of Canadian Major Junior Hockey by winning the Q’s Championship tourney last week.  The Sea Dogs have been on a lot of Penguins fans radars this season as our 1st round draft pick in 2009 Simon Despres plays for Saint John.  Despres will turn 20 over the summer which means this is likely his last season in the QMJHL before jumping to the AHL and Wilkes-Barre.  He is considered to have a legitimate chance of making the Penguins NHL roster out of camp.

The NHL Network will be televising the Memorial Cup for the fourth time and if you’d like to get a good look at Despres the first game is tonight at 7pm EST against the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors, the host team.  The Sea Dogs will then faceoff against the OHL Champion Owen Sound Attack on May 23rd at 7:00pm ET and the WHL Champion Kootenay Ice on May 24th, again at 7pm EST.

What Do I Want in NHL 12?

Marc-Andre Fleury being run in the outdoor venue in NHL12's new Winter Classic Mode

Y!’s Puck Daddy runs a story today about EA’s upcoming title update to the NHL franchise, NHL 12.  Apparently several new “features” are coming including a Winter Classic mode as well as the ability to knock the net off its moorings and players running goalies.  The article asks at the end what do you want to see in NHL 12?  As someone who has played more than a few (over 3200 games of online team play/EASHL in 3 years) I actually do have a few requests.  How about instead of new features for the back of the box EA goes in and fixes some of the existing problems? Penguins End of Season Rant

I wrote this pretty much after the Penguins were eliminated.  It seems appropriate that this launches the summer and the Pens content of this new venture.

The Pens made no adjustments.  The 1-3-1 was beatable for a few games and then the Bolts adjusted and took away the long dump in on Roloson by putting the back person in a position to quickly transition off of it.  Bylsma then did not counter this move offensively.

Our D-corps was good enough to win games with high caliber offensive players.  Bylsma was far too timid in giving 2/6 ice time after St. Louis burned them taking advantage of matchups.  Instead he was content to burn our top four out in an OT game and honestly they never recovered from it.  There was a fresh set of defensive legs in Engo that could have made a difference.  Niskanen played a woeful series, lazy turnovers all over the place.  Putting him in for all seven baffles me.  Read the rest of this entry »
